- Richard Paul Whitener, 62, passed away unexpectedly Dec. 27, 2008, at Frye Regional Medical Center. He was born Sept. 22, 1946, in Catawba County to the late Clarence and Nellie Watts Whitener.
- In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Janice Whitener, and a sister, Patsy Bowman. He was self-employed in the trenching business.
- Survivors include his wife, Alice Sigmon Whitener of the home; a stepdaughter, Lori Kirby of Hickory; and two granddaughters, Brooke Eggers of Hickory and Jordan Holsclaw of Newton. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at Bass-Smith Funeral Home chapel at 2 p.m., with the Rev. David Guelzow officiating. The family will receive friends tonight, Monday evening, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephens Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Cemetery. Bass-Smith Funeral Home & Crematory in Hickory is serving the family of Mr. Whitener.
