Ervin A. Nickel, 75, had been active in Germantown Township
Springfield: The funeral service for Ervin A. Nickel, 75, of rural Springfield, was held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 6, at Springfield United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Calvin Daniels, officiating. The internment was in the Springfield City Cemetery.
He died Saturday, Sept. 3, at Springfield Hospital.
He was born October 25, 1912, in Germantown Township, the son of August and Louise Pankonin Nickel.
He married Mildred Gerth on September 26, 1935, at Germantown United Brethren Church. He lived his entire life in Germantown Township until moving to Springfield in 1961.
He served as Germantown assessor for many years. He was a member and director of the Red Rock Chorus for many years, a member of a barbershop quartet, and played bass horn in the Sanborn City Band. He enjoyed singing, golf, baseball, horseshoe games, softball, and pheasant hunting. He was a former member of the Red Rock E.U.B. church, and then a member of the United Methodist Church of Springfield. He was a charter member of the Springfield Golf Club. He was a member of the Springfield Industries Board. Following retirement from the farm he worked at the A&W Drive Inn and the golf club.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mildred in 1987; a brother, Henry, and sister, Lydia Essig.
He is survived by a son, LaMoine Nickel, Lamberton; two granddaughters; and three sisters, Mrs. Ella Dammann, Redwood Falls, Mrs. Selma Werner, Springfield, and Mrs. Agnes (Walter) Kosel, Jeffers.
The casket bearers were Dennis Karow, Robert Kosel, Dean Kosel, Bernett Nickel, William Nickel, and Roger Gerth. Arrangements were by Sturm.
