Second child of eight born to Michael William Rose and Elizabeth Green Kelly.
When Richard was 5 years old, his father took him to hear Abraham Lincoln speak. Richard was lucky enough to shake Mr. Lincoln's hand.
He married Sarah Ann Buchanan Patterson on October 3, 1875 in Dallas County, Missouri.

Richard, Sarah and their seven children came by covered wagon to Claremore, Indian Territory in 1892 from Dallas County, Missouri. It took 8 days. They farmed and ran The Little Jewel, a cafe across from the Mason Hotel in Claremore.
