John H Appling, a pioneer citizen of this county and for many years a resident of Appling district in the southeastern part of the county, died at his home in said district on the 15th ultimo from cancer of the stomach, but his death was unknown to his many friends and acquaintances in Merced until his widow came to town to petition for probate of will. Mr Appling was a native of Mississippi and 71 years of age. The deceased was well liked by all who knew him and had the reputation of being honorable in all his dealings with his fellow man. He was a devoted husband, a kind and loving father, and loyal friend and a good neighbor. John H Appling was possessed of a kindly nature, a generous soul and a warm heart. He leaves a widow, a son, and two daughters to mourn his death. His daughters are Mrs Martha Ann Blanchard, Melisa M Appling and his son is Joel M Appling. The funeral services were conducted by Rev Mr Sawrie of the M E Church and the internment took place in the family plot in the Plainsburg cemetery.
