P. C. Appling Dead
Old Pioneer Passes Across the Great Divide

Peter C. Appling, a pioneer of '49 and an early resident of this county, died at the county hospital this morning, of old age.
He was a native of Georgia, and was aged 83 years. He leaves a wife and five sons to mourn his loss. He also leaves a brother, C. W. Appling, of Los Banos, and a sister, Mrs. S. P. Delashmut, of Selma.

Deceased was one of a party of men who crossed the plains from Mississippi in 1849, and pros-cuted[sic] their search for gold in the Sacramento valley. He served two terms in the early legislature of California, going from Merced county. He gained some prominence as a lawyer. Many years ago he came to this county and settled in the foothills, where he has lived since. The remains were sent to Fresno for interment. The funeral will take place tomorrow.
