Joyce Matteson
Joyce LaVon Grogan Simmons Matteson, 58, daughter of Marion and Edith Grogan, was born Oct. 4, 1945, at Vinton, Iowa. She died Nov. 23, 2003, at Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains.
As a child, she lived in the Grogan and Tyrone communities. After she grew up, she lived in Kansas City, Omaha, Neb., California, Mo., Boonville, Jefferson City, Montier and Willow Springs.
She worked in and managed several restaurants, finally working in health care facilities such as hospitals and nursing homes. She had worked at Ozarks Medical Center at West Plains for the last six years.
One of her hobbies was making embroidered and appliquéd quilts.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Donna Hale; two stepbrothers, Delmar Bowen and Vernon Bower; and two husbands, Leroy Simmons and Harold Matteson.
Surviving are her sisters, Kathy Carr of Cabool, Georgia Helmer of Willow Springs and Virginia Freeman of Edgar Springs; a stepsister, Shirley Jones of Willow Springs; and her two Chihuahuas, Todie and Zippy.
Services were Nov. 26 at the Elliott-Gentry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Lovan and Father Sherman Wall officiating. Burial was in the Big Creek Cemetery near Yukon.
