Col. Gideon Smith was one of the two signers of the Declaration of Secession for Fannin County, Texas. They signed on Feb 2, 1861.

Gideon W Smith was the son of Nathan Alexander and Martha "Patty" Amonette Smith. He was one of seven children. His siblings were: Mary Sophia 1818-1846,Betsey1818-1846,Elfridge Gary 1821-1842,John Calvin 1823-1884,Permelia Ann 1825-1883 and Hampton 1829-?.
He married Mary Elizabeth Brownlee on 4-13-1837 in Lowdes Co. Mississippi. they had five children. James Milton 1855-?, Amme Pamela 1859-1920, Nancy B 1860-?,Gideon Jr 1863-1902 and Ida 1867-1947.
