She was born May 28, 1917, in Hinckley, one of five children born to Dr. Carleton and Mabel (Miller) Kelsey. She graduated from Hinckley High School in 1936 and then attended two years of further education at the University of Minnesota.
On May 6, 1939, she married Edwin Nordstrom, who preceded her in death in 1987. Also preceding her were her brothers: Dr. Chauncey Kelsey, Dr. Clive Kelsey; her sisters: Genevieve Yocum, and Ruth Harth; and her son-in-law Paul Torgersen.
Verna was active in many community groups and was co-founder of Mother's Camp in 1968, which is now in its 40th year of operation. She was employed by Pine County Human Services from 1966 to 1982 as Homemaker, retiring at age 65. She was a member of the Pine City Evangelical Free Church, where she served on the Missions Committee for many years.
Verna is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Dorothy Torgersen of Burnsville, Delores and Richard Hacker of Apple Valley, and Margi and Al Porter of Newport, Wash.; her son John Nordstrom of Pine City; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law Marion Kelsey of St. Paul.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at the Pine City Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Darrin Carlson officiating. Music was provided by Virginia Shuey and Jeff Lindstrom. Casket bearers were James Bjerke, Jay Moll, Jeffrey Lindstrom, Steven Ferrera, Michael Hacker, and Steven Hacker. Interment was at the Milburn Cemetery in rural Pine City.
Arrangements were entrusted to Swanson Funeral Chapel of Pine City.
