Sandstone, MN Feb. 1976

Dr. Carleton Kelsey was born Jan. 18, 1881 in Brookings, South Dakota. He died at the age of 95 years on Feb. 27th. He spent most of his early years in Minneapolis and New Brighton where he attended school. Part of his youth was spent at Brook Park and he often told of his experience at the time of the Hinckley fire when he was 13 years of age, at which time the Kelsey home burned. The family survived by going into the mill pond at Brook Park. He was the last survivor of the Hinckley fire at Brook Park.

He graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1907. In June he married Mabel Miller of Brook Park and they moved to Colorado to practice medicine. His loving wife preceded him in death just last November 16th.

Two children, Cornellia and Carleton were born in Colorado and both died in 1910 in Minneapolis. Shortly afterwards, Dr. and Mrs. Kelsey moved to Hinckley where he practiced medicine until retirement in July 1948. There was an interruption of about 2 years while he served as Captain in the Medical Corps in World War I about 1 ½ years in France and Germany.

He received his 50 year award from the American Medical Association with distinct recognition for his dedicated medical service to the community as a family physician.

Other contributions to the community included serving on the school board and involvement with Boy Scouts.

A recent highlight which inspired him greatly, was the school reunion in Brook Park 1 ½ years ago.

His death brings to a close the generation of descendents of Dr. and Mrs. Chauncey Almer Kelsey.

Immediate survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Adam (Genevieve) Yocum, and Mrs. Calvin (Ruth) Harth of Hinckley, Mrs. Edwin (Verna) Nordstrom of Pine City; Dr. Chauncey Kelsey and Dr. Clive Kelsey of St. Paul; grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Services were held Monday March 1, at the First Presbyterian Church of Hinckley with the Rev. Richard Kroeger officiating. Miss Hattie Skinner was organist with Miss Corrilla Smith and grandson, Kenneth Yocum each singing hymns, Grandson, Alan Kelsey, offered prayer and read Dr. Kelsey's favorite passages from scripture.

Pallbearers were grandsons. Interment was at the Brook Park Cemetery.
