Mary Ann Randel was born on August 24, 1838, in the state of Indiana, the daughter of John Randel and Lydia Chapman Randel. Mary Ann came to Iowa in 1856 with her parents, who settled near Bellefountaine.

Mary Ann married Alfred McVay on February 18, 1858, in Marion County, Iowa.

From her obituary: Mary Ann Randel was a pioneer school teacher before her marriage. She was a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church since her conversion in 1861. She was the mother of 6 sons and 6 daughters. After her husband, Alfred McVay, passed away at their country home where they had spent their entire married life, Mary Ann moved to Knoxville in February 1905, where she spent the rest of her life. She died at home at the age of 86 years, 1 month, and 18 days.
