Rachel was the eighth of nine children. In 1934, she graduated from GAR Memorial High School in Wilkes-Barre. On January 3, 1942, she married Walter Bayer at the Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church in Wilkes-Barre. Rev. Reed performed the ceremony. The couple raised one son and one daughter.
