Bernard Veron Gilbert, 79, passed away at his home in St. George on December 11, 2008.


He was born October 30, 1929 in Acequia, Idaho to Leon and Rosetta Tracy Gilbert. He graduated from Box Elder High School and served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He served an LDS mission in Western Canada from 1955-1957. He graduated from Utah State University in 1961.


He married Colleen Tullis on December 28, 1957 in the St. George Temple. Five children were born to this union, Gregg (St. George); Gary (deceased); Christine (Jerry) Clipp, Roanoke, VA; Bruce (Darlene), Grantsville; Dennis (Amy), Fruit Heights and 12 grandchildren, Hanna Gilbert; Gary, Krysta, Haley, Cassidy, and Brandon Clipp; Kaitlyn McKenzie and Tyler Gilbert; Mereesa, Delanee, and Kara Gilbert. Survived by his brother Arnold (Janet), Brigham City; sister Glenna (Max) Grunig, Orem; sister-in-law Sharlean (Wendell), Ogden.


He served in various church callings including Bishop of the Grantsville 1st Ward and President of the Grantsville West Stake. He served a mission with Colleen in the Philippines for 12 months and Nauvoo, IL for 8 months. Colleen passed away on July 23, 1997.


He married Virginia Jackson on February 24, 2001 which gave him five step-children-Jay (Carol) Kimball, California; Gail (Pete) Witkamp, Bluffdale; Diane (Jim) Whitely, Bluffdale; Linda (Jim) Silver, North Salt Lake; Ann (Walt) Layton, Midvale and 26 grandchildren.


A visitation will be held on Monday, December 15, 2008 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary at 288 West St. George Boulevard in St. George, UT. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 2:00 p.m., with a visitation from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the Grantsville 7th LDS Ward Chapel at 415 West Apple Street in Grantsville, UT.
Interment will be in the Grantsville Cemetery under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary.
