Services held for Mr. R. T. (Theo) Avery

Richard Theo Avery, 83, of 300 South 14th Street, Honey Grove, passed away at 4:33 p.m. Wednesday, December 19, 1990 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Paris.

Funeral services for the former Honey Grove mayor were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 21 1990 at the Main Street Presbyterian Church in Honey Grove. The Rev. Scott Mackey, minister of the local church, conducted the services with Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Burial was made in the Oakwood Cemetery in Honey Grove.

Mr. Avery was born in the Dial community on February 19, 1907, a son of Richard Avery and Necie Alice Anderson Avery.

He married Nancy Grace Sockwell on June 19, 1926 in Ladonia, Texas.

He owned and operated Farmers Gin Company in Honey Grove and was involved in the ginning industry for forty-six years. He was elected Mayor of Honey Grove in 1970 and served one two-year-term. In May of 1982, he was again elected Mayor and served four consecutive two year terms. He chose to retire and did not run in the May 1990 city election.

Through the years Avery became known as "a man who loved his community" and he did much to benefit his community. He was well respected as a businessman and as a gentleman. He was a member of the Texoma Regional Planning Commission for several years and may best be remembered for accomplishing tasks to benefit the elderly in the community as he was sensitive to their needs.
