Gloria Bennie Faulkner died February 9, 2003 at Garden Terrace Care Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
Bennie was born in Navarro County on September 22, 1923. She graduated from Tarkington High School in 1942 as the Valedictorian of her class. She then left home and aided the war effort by welding in an airplane factory. At the close of her patriotic tenure, Bennie met Wayne Dubart Faulkner or 'Curly'. After a whirlwind courtship, the two married and enjoyed a long and fruitful marriage. Bennie worked periodically to add to her family's income, but decided to stay home when her children were young. Bennie and Curly's children were: first Ronnie, then Paula, Beth, and Frankie. Sadly, Ronnie died as an infant, but Bennie proudly raised her three children in the way of the Lord. She ran a cafe' and saved the profits to pay for cosmetology school. After working the cafe', and managing to keep up with three children and an active husband, Bennie succeeded and opened her own beauty shop. Bennie and Curly built their lives in Wink, Texas, where they resided from 1946-1978. After this period, Curly and Bennie moved to Oklahoma. Bennie then took a position in the local nursing home where she worked for several years then offered her services as a volunteer.
Cancer left her a widow in 1984, but Bennie remained steadfast in her service to others. She continued her volunteer work at the nursing home. Her work distinguished her as the selfless woman that she was and in 1991, the governor of the State of Oklahoma recognized Bennie with the highest honor that a volunteer can receive. She was presented a certificate of appreciation for outstanding volunteer services for her work with the elderly. While all of Bennie's achievements highlight her extraordinary character, she took the most pride in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her greatest loves were simply visiting with those that she loved, playing Skip-Bo, and fishing.
As Bennie joins the Lord, she is survived by two sisters, Tressa Mae Keith and Thelma Donaho and her husband Neil; two sisters-in-law, Helen Bain and Mary Summa; three of her children, Paula Faulkner Barker of Ranger, and her husband Jessie; Beth Faulkner Ream of Fort Worth, and her husband Robert, Frankie Faulkner of Dallas; four grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren: Karen Barker Volpitta, her husband John, and their children Kasey, Korey, Krista and Keith; Candy Barrett, her husband Mark, and their children Heather, Austin (who named Bennie 'Great'), Chelsea, and Shilo; Carl Barker, his wife Kathy, and their children Gus, Sam and Morgan; Samuel Faulkner and his mother Lenore Faulkner; many nieces and nephews and many friends from Corsicana to West Texas, to Oklahoma, to Ranger where she lived the final years of her life. A host of Christian brothers and sisters complete her family that remains tied together with common love.
Services for Bennie were held at 10 a.m. February 11, 2003 at Corley Funeral Home in Corsicana, Texas with interment at Mexia City Cemetery. Pallbearers included: Frankie Faulkner, Samuel Faulkner, Jessie Barker, Robert Ream, Mark Barrett, John Volpitta, and Carl Barker.
