James CROFOOT (CROWFOOT) was the son of James CROFOOT and Elizabeth TUTTLE who were early settlers of Cortland County, New York around the village of Baltimore coming from Fairfield County Connecticut. Both James' served in the New York Militia 1810-1811. James, Jr. then served in the Militia in the War of 1812 serving as a Lieutenant under Capt. Martin Phelps, Col. Flemming Company. James Crofoot, Jr married Sally Trowbridge in New York. James Jr. and Sally Crofoot had nine children: Ambrose, Spencer, Sally, Eliza, Archibald, Alvira, James 3rd, Mary, and Newton. The James Crofoot, Jr family were early settlers to Orange Twp. Noble County and came about 1837 from Cortland County, New York. Sally and her daughter Sally, it is believed, passed from the Great Swamp fever of 1838, that struck Noble County and wiped out entire families that year. James passed in 1840 leaving his orphan children in this newly formed county. During the 1st part of the 1840's the Crofoot children were reared in their uncle Samuel Trowbridge's household until Archibald came of age and married Amanda Green. James and Sally were my 2nd great grandparents.

(the Crofoot family headstones were beautifully restored by our distant cousins Amanda Blackman and her parents Jim Rozzy Wells) Thank You.
