Eliza was the daughter of Jacob and Rebecca "Myers" Mordecai. She married Samuel Hays Myers on 21 Nov 1827 and they resided in Petersburg, VA. Eliza was named for Mrs. Eliza Kennon, a distinguished woman and a great friend of the family. Eliza Mordecai was educated first in her father's school and after 1818 by her half-sisters, Rachel and Ellen, and then went to live with Rachel in Wilmington, NC. In the winter of 1825-26, she was introduced to society in Wilmington. After she and Samuel married, they lived in Petersburg, where he had been in business with Samuel Mordecai (her brother) since 1825. In 1832, this connection was dissolved and Samuel Hays Myers entered the tobacco business exclusively. He suffered from much gout and other ailments and died October 2, 1849 at the age of 50.
They were the parents of two children: (1)Edmund Trowbride Dana Myers, born July 13, 1830, married Frances Colquhoun Trigg and worked as a Civil Engineer for several railroads and (2) Caroline Myers, born December 5, 1844, married Edward Cohen of Baltimore, who became prominent in banking circles of Richmond.
After Samuel's death Eliza apparently resided with her mother, sisters, and brother Samuel in Richmond.
The anxiety she underwent during the mental problems of her sister, Caroline, along with the fatigue she would insist on undergoing in her domestic duties, and in nursing sick soldiers who were taken into her home to save their lives from exposure in camps or ill-tended hospitals, were all too much for her delicate frame. She would not permit anyone to relieve her from those duties. She passed away at the age of 52 in 1861.
