Laura was the youngest daughter of Jacob and Rebecca "Myers" Mordecai. She was unmarried, although she was engaged to JOHN BROOKE YOUNG, brother of Rosina Ursula Young (who married her brother, Augustus Mordecai) at the time of her sudden and unexplained death. Laura, died suddenly in Richmond, VA in full possession of youth and health about 6 o'clock on Thursday morning, July 4, 1839, aged 21 yrs, 2 months, and 10 days. She was buried close beside her father, Jacob. A broken column of white marble, on a plain pedistal of the same, on which are cut in unadorned characters, her name, age and the date of her death, now marks the hallowed spot. A wreath of flowers thrown over the top of the column from which a rose has fallen on the pedistal below is its only ornament.
Her obituary notice:
"Died suddenly on Thursday morning, the 4th of July, Laura, youngest daughter of the late Jacob Mordecai, possessed of rare beauty of mind, by nature greatly gifted, by education highly cultivated, with every prospect of happiness before her, both to give and receive. To those who knew and loved her (and who knew that did not love her?) there are left bleeding hearts, withered hopes, but resignation to the will of God."
