Athens and Limestone County were shocked when last Saturday news was received here of the death of one of our most widely known citizens, Robert S. Beattie, mortician, who died of a heart attack, while with his wife, he was visiting their daughter in Orange, Texas.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at the Methodist Church with Masonic honors. Dr. B.T. Waites conducted the service and the choir sang "Face To Face" and "Crossing The Bar." The impressive Masonic ritual was said at the grave by M.J. Easter in the presence of many friends. Interment was directed by Spry Funeral Service, with which Mr. Beattie was connected at the time of his death. The many floral offerings were mute evidence of the esteem in which the deceased was held, not only in business, but in homes where he had ministered through the years.
Mr. Beattie was born in Ionia, Michigan, 62 years ago. Early in life, he was united in marriage to Miss Evelyn Hine, a member of one of Athens' oldest families. Shortly afterward, he moved to Athens in 1908.
He was first engaged in the furniture business, but took up the work which he had been trained, and for which he was eminently fitted.
When death takes one who has been a part of the community for so long, it is then realized how hard it will be to fill his place. His quiet, refined and gentlemanly bearing at all times bespoke for him the confidence of many friends. In the hour of death, when hearts are saddened, his care for those who have passed has ever been a comfort to the bereaved, and it is generally said of him that no one within their knowledge has conducted such services with the ability and tenderness evinced by Mr. Beattie.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Evelyn H. Beattie; two sons, Robert A. Beattie of Chattanooga, and Ernest Beattie of Athens; two daughters, Mrs. Eugene Hatfield of Birmingham and Mrs. Sheridan Reid of Orange, Texas; his father, J.C. Beattie of Ionia, Michigan; one brother, John Beattie of Clarksdale, Mich.; four sisters, Mrs. Grace Elliott of Grand Rapids, Mich., Mrs. Herman Dietz of Van Nuys, Calif., Mrs. Nelson Austin of Upped Sandusky, Ohio, and Mrs. Donald Sperry of Chicago, Illinois; and five grandchildren.
