Moses Burris, Jr. was born to Moses Burris, Sr. and Frances [McKinney] in 1820 at Highland, OH. He worked as a farmer and married Elizabeth Ann Harvey on 19 September, 1838. Elizabeth Ann Harvey was born on the 14th of April, 1820 in Indiana. Her grandfather, Squire Osborn, served in the American Revolution with Captain Brevard's Company in Colonel Abram Shepard's 10th North Carolina Regiment.

Private Moses Burris, Jr. served in the Civil War with Company D of the 51st Infantry of Indiana. His regiment was mustered on December 14 of 1861, at Indianapolis, Indiana. The Muster Roll lists his residence as being in Greenfield, IN at the time of his enlistment. He would have fought in the Battle of Shiloh in April, 1862, and participated in the siege of Corinth, Mississippi in May. He would have also fought in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky in October, 1862, before marching on to Nashville, Tennessee in November. Moses Burris, Jr. died at Nashville in the Grand Army of the Republic Hospital on 28 November, 1862. He is buried at Nashville National Cemetery at Gallatin, TN in Plot # 6971.
