Born in Ohio, Heacock was 23 years old and residing in Kirkville, Iowa, when he enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant on October 14, 1861, in the 1st Iowa Infantry.

Within a month, he was commissioned in Co. F, of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Nov. 23, 1861. During operations in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas, Lt. Heacock was leading Company F in action at Talbot's Ferry when he was struck in the forehead by a shot, and fell dead.

2nd Lieutenant William A. Heacock was the first member of the 4th Iowa Cavalry to be killed in action.
