When his older brother did not follow their father into the shoemaking trade, it was left to Peter to do so. Clearly it did not agree with him and eventually he decided to leave his sweetheart and family behind in Denmark.

He came to Low Moor, Iowa, where he worked as in a hay field and as a grain binder. He would later recall proudly, "I got $ 1 per week in the shoe shop in Denmark, $ 1 per day in the hay fields, and $ 2 per day in the harvest fields of America." With his new found prosperity, Peter was able to convince his reluctant sweetheart, Eliza Jensen, to join him in America.
