Fred Hart was City Clerk (1934-1938), LaSalle County Treasurer (1938-1942), state Representative (1942-1950), and state Senator (1950-1966). Senator Hart introduced to the Senate the original measure that the state adopt the slogan "Land of Lincoln." This measure became official May 17, 1955. The motto appears on all Illinois license plates.
