Prominent Citizen Dead John Oswald, one of this community's most prominent citizens, died at his home two miles south of town last Tuesday morning at 8:10 o'clock after an illness which had been alarming to the family and friends for some weeks. Deceased was born in Ohio, May 1, 1851, and moved to Texas in 1870 with his parents and in 1875 moved to Bosque counth where he was married to Miss Engles just six years later; making forty years a citizen of this community at the time of his death. Mr. Oswald was considered one of the most industrous men of the whole community, paying close attention to business affairs and accumulating considerable wealth consisting of farm lands in the Bosque river valley near Clifton and amounting to hundreds of acres, being a lover of home and family he seldom was known to leave them only to come to town for a short business stay. Besides his immediate family which consisted of a wife; two daughters and five sons, an aged mother who is now past ninety-two years of age was present at the funeral services to see her oldest child in death, which was indeed a pitiable scene. Two sisters and five brothers are also living. Rev. J. H. Braswell, pastor of the Methodist Church was indeed interesting in his remarks to the many friends and the bereaved relatives in the funeral services which were conducted at the Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock. A mound covered with many beautiful flowers placed by loving friends and relatives marks the last resting place of the body in the Clifton Cemetery. The Record joins the many friends of the family in extending deepest sympathy in their sad bereavement. Source: The Clifton Record, Clifton, Texas, Friday, September 24, 1915; Pg. 1, Columns 5&6
