Star Valley loses One of its Most Respected Citizens

A rich and abundant life of one of Star Valley's most prominent and respected pioneers and citizens was ended Sunday, Sept 25 with the passing of Mrs Lettie Ann Dewey Campbell, 80, at the home of a daughter, Mrs Harold R. Papworth.
Wife, mother, school teacher, missionary, school trustee, devout church worker, legislator, postmaster, civic worker and friend and many other such titles would all have to be included to describe Mrs Campbell, who was the last survivor of her family of 21 children born to her father and his two wives.
Funeral services were held in the Afton North Ward chapel Wednesday, Sept 28 with Bishop Milton E. Erickson officiating.
Included in the program were Prelude and postlude music Margaret winters; Invocation Bp. Franklin R. Gardner; reading of life history LaRue Campbell;speakers Albert Barrus, Bert Allred, George F. Burton, Lorraine Brown and Bp. Milton E. Erickson; a tribute written by Martha Kennington and read by Mrs Shirley Haderlie; vocal solo, Mrs Lannice P. Montague, "My Faith in Thee", hymn Harvey Allred and Co,. "How Firm a Foundation". chorus original Singing Mothers (organized in 1939 by Mrs Campbell) "Oh Morn of Beauty", vocal solo, Mrs Annie Hood; chorus, Singing Mothers, "In The Time of Roses" benediction by H.M. Croft.
Prayer in the home preceding the services was offered by Leo Smith.
Pallbearers were Farrell Campbell, John Campbell, Melbourne Roberts, Burnell Roberts, Robert Campbell and Jerry Campbell.
Interment was in the Afton Cemetery with Schwab Mortuary in charge. The grave was dedicated by Bp. Osborne Low.
Lettie Ann Dewey Campbell, tenth child of John C. and Mary Allen Dewey was born in Deweyville. Box Elder County Utah. July 28, 1876. She attended college at Logan as well as Weber College in Ogden, Utah. Her first visit to Star Valley was in 1890 when she came with her mother and father at the age of 15. They came to visit their eldest son John Dewey Jr. and an uncle Chas. Allen.
In 1887 while visiting in Star Valley again she had a chance to take a teachers examination and upon obtaining a teachers certificate was hired to teach school in Dry Creek, now Osmond. It was a one room log school house and students ranged from ages 51/2 to 20 years.
In the spring of 1898 Chester Campbell Lettie's fiancé, was called on a mission to Great Britain. Stake Pres. George Osmond suggested they marry and go on a mission together, so she received her call from Deweyville Ward, Box Elder Stake. They were married April 12 1898 in the Salt Lake Temple and left for England in July 1898.
On June 21, 1899 their first child Victoria was born. In August 1899 Mrs Campbell being honorably released to return to her mother's home in Deweyville, sailed with her infant daughter and arrived in New York Sept 1899.
When her husband returned from the British Mission, April 25, 1900 they came to Fairview to make a home. Lettie was again hired as a school teacher.
She has been active in practically every organization of the church. She was Relief Society president and choir organist for many years in the Fairview ward. she was a member of the Stake Primary Board in the early 1900's and served as Stake YWMIA First Counselor for ten years.
As a representative in the Wyoming Legislature in 1930 she represented the women well. She was an ardent Farm Bureau member for years and helped in the advancement of the state extension program. Schooling and education have been a source of much of her joy in life as was true also of her husband and seven surviving children who are: Victoria Johnson, Bear River City Utah; Lois Roberts Ogden; Elmina Papworth, Afton; Rulon Dewey and Allen Campbell, Afton; and Blaine Campbell Guernsey Wyo. Also surviving are 27 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Eleven of her descendants have chosen to teach school or be connected with the school in some way as their profession. Twelve of them have college degrees. Five have filled missions.A grandson now represents her family in Denmark. Recent world conflicts, member of her family armed services, nine in the Air Corps and Navy.
