John Adams Wallace was the fourth child of Col. Samuel Wallace and Susanna Adams. Prior to the War of the Rebellion, he and his brother, William Eli Wallace, moved from Kentucky to Texas. During the War he enlisted as a Private in Company H, 2nd Texas Cavalry and eventually attained the rank of Adjutant.

John and Sarah Coulson married on 14 April 1869 and had one child, Violetta Wallace, born 31 July 1882. Violetta married Joseph C. Guest.
