ELIZABETH OGDEN WHITAKER

Elizabeth Ogden was born on 09 Apr 1744 at Elizabethtown, Union Co, NJ, the eldest of ten children born to the union of Isaac Ogden and Jane Black.

She married Mr Squire Whitaker on 02 May 1765 in Goshen, Orange Co, NY, the son of Richard Whitaker and Phoebe Jones.

Elizabeth and Squire had seven children: Mary Esther 20 Apr 1766, Sarah 27 Apr 1768, Margaret 04 Sep 1770, John 14 Aug 1773, Benjamin 06 Feb 1776, Stephen 23 Jul 1779 and Jesse 15 Feb 1782.

As patriot she was with her husband at the Wyoming Massacre of the 3rd of July 1778. Pittston Fort was the rendezvous point because it was the fort nearest their home in time of danger. The morning after the massacre, British Major Butler and his Rangers demanded the surrender of the fort. There was nothing else to do. Major Butler's Indian allies proceeded at once to acts of cruelty and revenge upon the settlers.

Elizabeth Ogden Whitaker had ministered to those in the fort; the aged, the women and the children. After the surrender, the Whitaker family, with others, fled over the mountains back to their old home in Orange County and to only within another year experienced the massacre at Minisink.

Through famine, flood, two Indian Massacres and the perils of the wilderness, Elizabeth Ogden Whitaker helped to keep stout the hearts of those about her and has been recognized by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, as a Patriot and caused her name to be placed upon the Roll of Honour.

Squire died on 31 Jan 1817 in Deposit, Broome Co, NY, aged 74 Years 5 Months 29 Days. Elizabeth remained a widow until her death sixteen years later on 18 Oct 1833 in Deposit, Broome Co, NY, aged 89 Years 6 Months 9 Days.
