PIONEER OF '64 CALLED BEYOND GREAT DIVIDE
Samuel McDowell, Who Built First Store in Boise Valley, Passes Away at Star.
STAR--In the death Wednesday of Samuel McDowell, the Boise valley lost a pioneer who had located in this part of Idaho in 1864. He was 79 years old, and death followed a long illness with paralysis.
The funeral was held Thursday afternoon from the Christian church, Rev. C. L. Parker officiating. Interment was in the Star cemetery.
Surviving members of the family are the son, Charles W. McDowell, and daughter, Mrs. Rosa Taylor.
Mr. McDowell was a native of Pennsylvania, having been born in Bucks county, December 24, 1837. As a sturdy young man he early felt the lure of the great west, and crossed the plains in 1860. Freighting in the first quartz mill to reach the Boise valley, he disposed of it at Rocky Bar, where it was erected.
Some of the earliest stage routes of this region were established by Mr. McDowell, who engaged in the freighting business. He is also credited with having built and conducted the first store in the valley.
