NOTE: interviews conducted in the 1960's with the family of Ella's half-brother, Rufus, reveal that Ella was the daughter of Tommy and Sarah's daughter, Martha. When Martha later married, her daughter wanted to continue living with her grandparents, Tommy and Sarah. Ella claimed her grandparents as her parents on her marriage license. Her grandparents claimed her as their daughter on census records.
