James Archibaald Safley, son of Archibald and Lucy (Walenta) Safley, was born December 17, 1907 in Cedar County, Iowa. He passed away on January 8, 1997 at home on his farm after an extended illness. He graduated from Tipton High School in 1926 and a few years later, on December 21, 1933, he was united in marriage to Ethel Pearl Gritton in Cedar Rapids.
Funeral services were held 10:30 AM Saturday, January 11, 1997, at Fry Funeral Home in
Tipton, Iowa, with Rev. Carol Lamp officiating.
Casket Bearers were Tom Beckman, Leland Gritton, Norman Gritton, Darrell Penningroth,
Raymond Penningroth and Mike Wagner.
Burial was in Red Oak Cemetery, Tipton, Iowa.
Archibald farmed his entire life here in Cedar County and was a member of Red Oak Grove
Presbyterian Church, the Red Oak Cemetery Association and the Tipton Moose Lodge. He
previously has served as a county trustee for Center Township and was a past member of the
Cedar County Historical Society and the Cedar County Fair Association.
He is survived by three daughters, Beverly Burgess of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; Helen Lumpa of Iowa City; and Ethel Jean Oetting of Alamogordo, New Mexico; one brother, Foster Safley
of North Liberty; eight grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.
Archibald was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel, on July 14, 1994 and two sisters,
Jessie Penningroth and Florence Smith.
