Funeral services for Mrs. C. M. Hawkins, former resident of Houston, who died in Memphis, TN Friday night, were held at the Baptist Church in Vardaman Sunday afternoon with the Rev. W. C. Stewart of Houston officiating, assisted by the Rev. J. F. Hartley of Derma. She was 51 years of age. A native of Woodland, Mrs Hawkins was before her marriage to Mr. Hawkins more than 25 years ago, Leila Hill, daughter of Mr. J. W. Hill and the late Eugenia Pounds Hill. In her youth she moved with her parents to Vardaman. A part of her young ladyhood was spent in Houston where she attended school.
After her marriage she lived several years in Natchez and other places, returning to Houston more than ten years ago. While here, until her health failed, she was active in the business life of Houston and also in church and Sunday School work, having been a member of the Baptist church since childhood.
About a year ago she moved with her family to Memphis, TN. While she had been in ill health for several years she was up and was thought to be improving. her sudden death came as a severe shock to her family and friends.
Although of a retiring nature, all who knew her recognized and appreciated her, seeing beneath a sincerity and charitable nature foreign to many.
Her body was brought Saturday evening to the home of her father, in Vardaman, being carried later to the church. Burial was in the cemetery at Vardaman.
Besides her father and husband, Mrs. Hawkins leaves two sons, Charles and Armis, of Memphis; three sisters, Mrs. E. C. Hawkins of Fulton, Mrs. Otis Cook and Miss Eugenia Hill of Vardaman; four brothers, Rev. D. L. Hill of Somerset, KY, A. A. Hill of Bruce, G. E. Hill of Calhoun City and J. W. Hill, Jr. of Vardaman.
