Hazel Collier Olsen, 88, passed away Nov. 10, 2008, in Vernal.

She was born Sept. 25, 1920, in Naples, the third of four children born to Joseph and Myrtle Gardiner Collier.

Hazel spent her childhood in the Naples area where she attended Naples Elementary grades 1-8. She graduated from Uintah High School in 1938. She was active in sports and played on Uintah High School girl's basketball team.

Hazel married Charles Edwin Olsen on June 6, 1939, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Charles and Hazel lived in the Naples area where they ran the Neslo Nulaid Egg Farm, raised chinchilla, mink and fox, and also operated a cattle ranch and a farm. Hazel and Charles had five sons, Ted Charles, Wayne J., Dan Edwin and Wade L. Olsen. They later adopted Ricardo Salazar. Hazel was a devoted wife, a successful homemaker, a loving mother, and a dedicated church member.

Hazel and Charles became one of the first 19 couples in the LDS Church to open their home to the LDS Indian Placement Program. Connie Hoyee of Polacca, Ariz., lived with the Olsen family for nine years until she graduated from high school. Connie's sister Mary Ruth Hoyee lived with them for one year. Fernando Sanchez of Mexico also lived with Charles and Hazel while he attended high school. Their home was open to anyone who needed a place to live, a hot meal to eat, and a lot of love.

Hazel was a very active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as a Primary teacher, Gospel Doctrine teacher, Relief Society teacher and a visiting teacher for nearly 60 years of her life. Hazel also served in the Naples 1st Ward and Uintah Stake Relief Society presidencies and the Uintah Stake Primary presidency. Prior to her death she worked as a temple worker in the Vernal LDS Temple.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers, Leland and Lewis Collier; a son, Wayne Olsen; and a grandson, Jacob W. Olsen.

Hazel is survived by her sister,Vena Collier Baker of Naples; sons, Ted and Linda Olsen of Baytown, Texas, Dan and Brenda Olsen and Wade and Ronda Olsen of Naples, and Ricardo and Doris Salazar of Vernal; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Nov.17, 2008, in the Naples 1st Ward Chapel.

A viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m., Nov. 16, at the Thomson Blackburn Vernal Mortuary and one hour prior to services at the Naples Chapel.

Interment will be in the Vernal Memorial Park under the direction of the Thomson Blackburn Vernal Mortuary.
