THE FOLLOWING PRESENTS A BIG QUESTION: Amsterdam Evening Recorder, Monday, July 6, 1931 ~ Twenty Years, Ten Years, One Year Ago Today ~ July 6, 1911 ~ Death of Philo Monk near Tribes Hill. NOTE: Death date on cemetery marker clearly states 1903 ~ this newpaper death notice is dated 1911 (1931 ~ twenty years ago ~ 1911). Possibly, there are 2 Philo Monks during this time period. or not ... perhaps Philo died twice! The following obituary adds to the confusion ...

Amsterdam Evening Recorder, Friday, July 7, 1911 ~ Philo Monk ~ Phllo Monk died at the home of his son, William Monk, about a mile west of Tribes Hill, Thursday afternoon, at 5 o'clock, after a brief illness of a complication of diseases. The deceased, who was a veteran of the Civil War, was about 75 years of age. He is survived by three sons, William, of Tribes Hill; Charles, of Cold Brook and William,(should be Alonzo) of Johnstown. One sister, Mrs. Hattie Mosher, of Middle Sprite, and one brother, Marshall Monk, of Lassellsville, also survive. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the church at Middle Sprite, and the interment will take place in the cemetery near the church.

Facts ... all the above is true but the the dates are 8 years off from the headstone in Middle Sprite Cemetery. Philo and Happy did have 3 sons William, Charles and Alonzo (not a second William) and they lived where it is reported. He also had a sister, Harriet, who married a Mosher, hence the Hattie Mosher. He also had one surviving brother, Marshall in Lassellsville. He was, and is, the only Philo Monk buried in the Middle Sprite Cemetery. His age would of been 75 per the cemetery marker but 83 per the death date reported in the obituary ... He is shown in the 1910 Census living with his son, William, on Albany Bush Road in the Town of Mohawk, aged 74 years, thus making his birth year 1836, which was 6 years younger than his wife, Happy Mosher Monk, who was born circa 1829 or 1830 per all census and family records.

We must now assume the marker in the Middle Sprite Cemetery is incorrect and he actually died in 1911 as stated in the obituary.
