Obituary
JOHN BRUNER GOFF
A pall of gloom covered the county last Thursday morning when the word was phoned here that Mr. John Bruner Goff had died that morning at 5:30 o'clock, at the Providence Infirmary in Mobile.
Mr. Goff, 82 years of age, was one of the oldest men in the county, in both age, as well as citizenship here. He was born at Three Rivers in Jackson County, Miss., on August 24, 1861, the son of the late John Huey and Martha Ann Goff. Mr. Goff attended the school of Moss Point and Cooper's Institute in Meridian.
"Uncle Bruner" as he was affectionately known by his friends, has lived a long and useful life, having served his country, state, county and community faithfully. From his early days, he has been a beneficial factor in his civil affairs. He was deputy sheriff in Jackson County for fourteen years, and a member of the Board of Supervisors of that county for six years, being president of the Board during two of those years in Jackson County. After the creation of George County, he served ten years as a member of the Board of Supervisors of this county; four years of which he was president of the Board. Later he served four years as Justice of the Peace.
Mr. Goff has also at all times been a friend of the common schools, and has done much to promote the educational interest of his community and county.
He joined the Methodist Church when he was only sixteen years of age, and since that time has been a consecrated Christian, and an enthusiastic church and Sunday school worker. He was a member of the Pleasant Hill Methodist Church at Basin, where he served as steward and superintendent and secretary of Sunday school.
January 26, 1882, he was married to Mary Matildy Wyatt, and together the couple made their home in the Basin Community, and to this couple eight children were born, one daughter, Laura Eugenia Goff and one son, William Griffin Goff, preceded them to the grave.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church, with Rev. E.D. Simpson, Rev. W.C. Fulgham, Rev. S.E. Nix, Rev. A.J. Boyles, and Rev. G.S. Jenkins, participating in the services. Interment was in Basin Cemetery with McKays Morticians directing.
Pallbearers were C.A. Bryan, John Nyman, Walter Ivy, M.N. Howell, Tom Bozes, and W.H. Patterson, all of Lucedale.
He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. M.N. Brown, and Mrs. Henry Wallsmith, Lucedale, Rt.3, and Mrs. D.D. Kennedy, Sr., Ruleville; three sons, E.H. Goff, and A.B. Goff, Lucedale, and N.W. Goff, of Pascagoula, 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren who have the sympathy of friends during their bereavement.
Friends and relatives from away attending the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. George Wyatt, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Mack, Mrs. Jack Mack, Mrs. Ira Wyatt, of Escatawpa, Mrs. A.H. Wallsmith, daughter and son, of Wiggins, MR. and Mrs. I.D. Wyatt, Citronelle, Ala., Mrs. R.O. Embry and Mrs. Ella Ellzey of Pascagoula.
