Stephen V. Bray

Steve Bray, one of the long time residents of Lewellen and community, passed away at the Mary Lanning hospital in Hastings last Saturday, May 7th, at 9:00 o'clock in the evening. He had been a patient In the hospital, suffering with asthma, since the previous Saturday.

Mr. Bray had been in the barbering trade for sixty years and had been in Lewellen almost a half century. His wife died a few years ago and he has been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Harold Brodine at Lewellen, but the past eighteen months had been with another daughter, Mrs. Florence Stansbury.

For several years the family had lived on a homestead 25 miles northeast of Lewellen and later moved to town. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, a son, Earl, who was killed in World War I, his son, Raymond, who was burned to death in a fire in Lewellen a few years ago, and by his wife. Mr. Bray was born October 3, 1870, and was nearly 85 years of age. He had given up barbering five years ago because of poor health.

Surviving are Lee of Anchorage, Alaska, Harold of Lead, S. D., Florence of Roseland, Neb., Mary Alice of Lewellen; also four grandchildren seven great grandchildren and a sister living at Port Angeles, Washington.

Funeral services were held Wednesday in the Lewellen Lutheran church with Rev. Carl McConnell, pastor of the Oshkosh Methodist church delivering the sermon. Burial was in Ash Hollow cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bray of Lead, Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Kailey of Henry, Nebraska, and Lee Bray of Anchorage, Alaska, were here from a distance to attend the services.
