Wesley Essington was born October 16, 1861 to Bethel J. and Barbra Caroline Beal in Hamilton county, Indiana. They moved to Bedford, IA in 1886. Wesley went by covered wagon to Norton, Norton county, Kansas established a homestead in Rawlins county in 1888. He lived in a dugout during part of this time.

In 1894 he married Mary Arminta Bird. They had 12 children, 7 girls, 5 boys:

Their youngest son Wesley died in North Africa in 1942 in WWII. He is buried in the American Cemetery, Berling, North Africa.

"W.E." as he called had a truck farm and hauled freight from Colby to the country store taking 3 days to make the round trip with a wagon and a team of four horses. In 1912 he moved his family to a farm northwest of the Chardon Store, Chardon, Rawlins county, Kansas. There his beloved wife Mary died in 1917. He kept his family together until they were grown. He moved to Colby, Thomas county, Kansas in 1928 and about 1930 he began working for the city until his death in 1950.
