Rev. Milton H. Forbes, 89, of 106 N. Iowa Ave., died at 8:50 p.m. Oct. 29, 2008, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

He was born Jan. 18, 1919 in Livonia, Mo. to Norris and Odessa Crawford Forbes. He married Betty Leedom Boone Jan. 6, 1971.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Battle of the Bulge and received a Purple Heart. He was licensed in the Assemblies of God and Open Bible churches and had published a book and several articles. Under his ministry, the Eldon Assembly of God was built and established. He was an evangelist. He served as pastor in the Bladensburg Christian Church Disciples of Christ and for the past 10 years served as pastor at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Ottumwa, retiring Aug. 1, 2008.

Surviving is his wife, Betty; two daughters, Gloria Sample and her husband, Dale, Barbara Bower and her husband, Jim, all of Ottumwa; a stepdaughter, Kim Boone Gale and her husband, Gary of Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Tammy Jones, Tina Jones, Teresa Corder, Leslie Bormann, Randy Leedom and Joe Granneman; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Dewaine Forbes of Edmond, Okla.; and numerous loved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Milton Thomas "Tommy" Thorne; two sisters, Gertha Simmons and Verla Belger; four brothers, Homer, Marshall, Doyle and Walter Forbes.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Rev. Lowell Simmons and Rev. George Edgerly officiating.

Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
