Christopher Jenson (Johnson) was born near Copenhagan, Denmark. He was only 14 when he decided to stow away on a ship bound for New York. He hid while the ship sailed out of port, leaving behind the unrest and hardships of Europe. After landing in New York, he worked his way to the Great Lakes area, then southwest along the Mississippi River. Eventually, he drifted west and found work on the Creswill Ranch. Because of his Danish accent, people in the U.S. misunderstood his pronunciation of his last name, so the spelling was finally changed from Jenson to Johnson. The new spelling appears on the title to land he bought in Callahan County in 1883. This land still belongs to his heirs. His daughter, Mallie Johnson and grandson Lowell Johnson were recognized in 1983 by the Texas Family Heritage in recognition for a Century or more of continuous ownership and operation as a family agricultural enterprise.

About the time of his arrival in this area, the William C. Buchanan family moved from Nashville, Tenn. He and Sarah Cross Buchanan arrived in Callahan County with their 12 children. One of these daughters, Margaret E. Buchanan was soon attracted to the young Danish man, Chris Johnson. The couple were married at Tecumseh Peak on Dec. 28, 1892. To this union were born 3 children: Sarah Annie Slough, who died in 1978 at age 84, Mallie Johnson, who died in 1986, and William Chris, who died at age 20 of a rheumatic heart condition.
