Mary Alice "Dude" Smith Lewis passed away peacefully at her residence in Macomb,IL at 1:15 a.m. Saturday, Oct 25, 2008. She was born on Nov. 22, 1926 to Ralph and Hilda Bell in Canton, IL.
She married Charles Smith of Plymouth, IL in 1946 and later married Edward Lewis of Beardstown, IL in 1980. She is survived by her son Randy (Janet) Smith of Egg Harbor Township, NJ and a daughter, Kathie (Jay) Butler of Macomb; stepchildren, Philp (Kathie) Lewis of Kansas City, MO; Mary (James) Richie of Clarksville, TN; Michael Lewis of Virginia, IL; Patricia (Robert) Soer of Beardstown, IL; Robin (Debra) Lewis of Bearstown, IL.; James (Jewel) Lewis of Gibson City, IL. Three sisters: Pauline (Giles) Griswold, Ann (Philip) Hedgecock, and Margaret Adams also survive as well as grandchildren Stacy (Tim) Clark, Melissa and Randee Smith; several step-grandchildren, several great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ed, brother Ralph "Jack" Bell, and sisters Helen Sargent, Charlotte Barton, and Francele Bottom.
"Dude" was a graduate of Western Illinois University and taught for many years in Plymouth and Beardstown, which she enjoyed very much. She was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed watching baseball, bowling, playing cards, traveling and spending time with her great-grandchildren, Kalli Clayton and Britta and Austin Clark.
She will be greatly missed by all those that had the pleasure to be a part of her life. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008 at Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home in Macomb, IL with Pastor Frank Shaw officiating. Visitation with family and friends was held from 4 to 6 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008 at the funeral home. Following the services, burial was in Plymouth at Rosemont Cemetery. Memorial donations were made to MDH Hospice or American Cancer Society in her memory.
