On Sunday afternoon at five o'clock, Mrs. John Smith passed peacefully away at her home southwest of Chebanse. Mrs. Smith suffered a third stroke of paralysis Friday afternoon and from that time until the Death Angel claimed her soul, her life was slowly ebbing away.
Mary Petersen was born at Slesewick, Denmark, June 14, 1862, and died at Chebanse, Sunday, Sept. 15, 1918, at the age of 59 years, 2 months and 29 days. During her early childhood she immigrated to this country with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Christ Petersen. On November second, 1861 the subject of this sketch was united in marriage to John H. Smith. During the following year Mr. and Mrs. Smith moved to Chebanse where they continued to reside until the latter's death. Besides the grief-stricken husband, four sons, Henry, somewhere in France; George, of Kankakee; William, of Fort Dodge, Ia.; Peter of Great Lakes Naval Station, and one daughter, Marie, of Kankakee, survive. A daughter, Kathryne passed away five years ago. An aged mother, Mrs. Petersen, two sisters, Mrs. Anna Hyrup of Momence, and Mrs. Thrye Yocum, of Joliet, and four brothers, Jens Petersen, of DeKalb; George Petersen, of Joliet; Christ Petersen of Rochelle; and William Petersen, of Chicago, are also left to mourn the death of a loved one.

Mary Peterson Smith, who died Sunday, September 15 at her home in Chebanse, was a native of Denmark. For the past 36 years she has resided in Chebanse where she was highly esteemed. She is survived by the husband, J.H. Smith, four sons and one daughter, and by her aged mother, one son, Henry, is with the American Army in France and two are in army training camps in this country. -Watseka Republican, September 15, 1918
