John Peter Schaefer was originally from Alendorf Germany. He immigrated at age 26 arriving in New York on Sept 3, 1852 on the ship called the Antarctic which departed from Antwerp, Belgium. The Schaefer Passengers included his parents: Johann 56 and Maria 46 and his siblings Angela 23, Lena 21, Susanna 11, Mathias 7 and Barbara 5.

"John Peter, his siblings and parents were part of a large group of settlers, in family units who arrived at Swan Lake, Nicollet County, Minnesota in 1857 from Kenosha County, Wisconsin, where they had settled when they arrived from Germany.

John Peter was a great asset to the pioneer parish, having the ability to sing all the Masses from memory without accompaniment. His home also served as the 'hotel' for the weary missionaries traveling the trail from St. Peters to Fort Ridgeley in southern Minnesota" Source: The Orange Book

John Peter married Elizabeth Epper on June 21, 1866 in Swan Lake, Nicollet County, Minnesota.

John Peter and Elizabeth had 10 children: Mary Katherine Schaefer (Miller) (1867 – 1896), John Peter Schaefer (1869 – 1945), Adam Schaefer (1871 – 1923), Philip Schaefer (1871 – 1951), Rose Schaefer (Parries) (1874 – 1955), Angela Clara Schaefer (1876 – 1957), Leo Nicholas Schaefer (1878 – 1964), Ludwig John Schaefer (1880 – 1957), Elizabeth M. Schaefer (Pickle)(1882 – 1939), and Ann Florence Schaefer (Gallagher)(1885 – 1961)
