We regret to say that Mr. Jas. Metcalf of Gunnison has lost another child from diphtheria, Little Mabel who succumbed to the scourge on Tuesday the 28th 1890. We tender our consolation in which all join us. [Note death date given is one day earlier than date given in Sexton records and on the tombstone.]
James & Caroline Metcalf lost three children to diptheria in a three-week period. The first was nine year-old Marianna or Laura E, who died January 24th. The second was eleven-year-old Mabel on January 29th, and then on February 8th they lost Lester, who was barely six.
