GEORGE BOOHER DEAD
HE PASSED AWAY AT THE ASYLUM YESTERDAY--A REMARKABLE MIND
The Gazette chronicles this morning the death of Mr. George Booher, a man known to all old residents of this city, who passed away at 10 o’clock yesterday morning in the Michigan asylum. Mr. Booher was about 60 years old and came of one of Kalamazoo’s best families in her earlier days. For years he resided with his parents on South street where the Eggleston mansion now stands. He obtained a collegiate education at Kalamazoo College and was one of the brightest scholars the school ever had. In the mastery of Latin, none were equal to him and many times has he assisted lawyers in this city, while sawing wood for a living, in translating difficult legal phrases, terms and sentences in that language. On one occasion, an old law. book, containing some extremely difficult Latin sentences was taken to him, for translation. Several lawyers had given the task up when Mr. Booher was mentioned. Entering his dingy room, the white-haired man greeted his visitors and in a twinkling read the lines greatly to their surprise. Reverses fell upon the Booher family, and. the boys were left to shift for themselves. For years they were known characters on the street as they were queer in their actions going about the streets recognizing no one, but frequently fighting each other and then shaking hands. Their occupation was sawing and splitting wood and together they saved considerable money as they were no spend thrifts. George was heavily built while his brother who now survives him, is short, slender and very feeble. About four years ago George became insane and was taken to the asylum. Ten minutes before he was found dead on his bed, be, was singing, His father died the same quick manner. The funeral will occur Monday. Kalamazoo Gazette May 1, 1891 page 6
