Burkett Copass of Monroe Co KY, age abt 40, died 20 Dec 1968 at Rock Island, IL. Mr. Copass was shot and killed when he attempted to disarm a gunman who was holding up a tavern. Death was apparently caused by a 25-caliber bullet wound in the back.
Mr. Copass was a construction worker employed by the Phelan Construction Co. of Devenport, IA.
Leaving to mourn his death are his wife, Mrs Mescal Hayes Copass; his mother, Mrs Oatie Bledsoe Copass, and his children: Marie, Gary, Myra, Tina, Holly Ann, Dale and John Paul Copass, all of the home. Also surviving him are his brothers, Kermit, Theo and Dwayne, all of Monroe Co; Elvin of Glasgow KY, Hascal of Louisville KY and Rev. Wyman Copass of Bowling Green KY.
Services were conducted at Beautiful Home Baptist Church 23 Dec 1968 by Rev. Nobel Cottrell, and burial was in Beautiful Home Cemetery, with Yokley-Polston Funeral Home in charge.
