He enlisted in the 18th Maine and 1st Maine Heavy Artillery Co. B Nov. 19, 1863 at age 18. He died at City Point, VA.June 24, 1864 from head wounds received at the battle of Petersburg June 18, 1864.
His brother, Algernon(husband of Elizabeth P. Dolley) enlisted in the 14th Maine Reg at age 19 and survived the war.
After the battle of Harper's Ferry, Algernon had heard of the slaughter at Petersburg. He knew his brother was there and pushed ahead of his regiment and traveled 20 miles hoping to see his brother. He came upon a member of the 18th Maine and asked if he knew his brothers where-a-bouts. He was told he was shot in the head at Petersburg. Later in life he found that he died at City Point and buried there.
