Mrs. Florence Irene Hargett Welty Cook, 79, of 1213 Oakwood Drive, Frederick, died Monday, June 8, at her residence. She was the wife of Elmer C. Cook. Born Oct 30, 1907, in Charlesville, Mrs. Cook was the daughter of the late William Steiner and Florence Virginia Harris Shankle.
Mrs. Cook had been employed as a seamstress with Sagner's Tailoring for 15 years, and the Muse Tailoring Company for 10 years. She worked for the City of Frederick as a school crossing guard for 10 years. She was a devoted member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and a member of Moose Lodge 371.
Surviving besides her husband are one son, Philip H. Welty, Thurmont; one daughter, Doris Welty Vona, Frederick; and the following stepchildren, Scott F. Welty of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Edward F. Cook of Brunswick, Terry L. Cook and Linda D. Studebaker, both of Frederick, Constance W. Stanley of Fairfax, Va., Virginia W. Trost of Baltimore; one brother. Norman A. Shankle, Frederick; seven grandchildren, Joseph A. Vona, Hollie R. Vona, Philip C. Welty, Deirtre W. Pizzo, Sharon H. Smith, Roger E. Hargett and Teresa L. Hargett; 10 step-grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Cook was predeceased by one son, Charles Edward Hargett, in December, 1974.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, and Wednesday, June 10, at the Smith Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 11, from the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Robert W. Wallace Jr., associate pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
