submitted by Travis Holt (48272081) 6-28-23:
John Adair, born 1793, moved to North Arkansas from Knoxville, Tennessee, in the early 1800's. He settled on the Buffalo River near what is now the Erbie community in Newton County, Arkansas. He left Knoxville to look for new hunting ground and unpopulated territory west of the Mississippi River. Adair and family loaded their ox cart with necessities such as an iron wash kettle, Dutch oven, saw, pole ax, muzzle loading rifle, and other needed supplies and traveled west to the Mississippi River. They went by barge and raft on the Mississippi and Arkansas Rivers to a point near Van Buren, Arkansas. They left this point and traveled overland through the Boston Mountains to the upper end of Big Buffalo River in the vicinity of Kingston, Arkansas. They followed the river bed from there to the Erbie settlement. This was the place where John Adair staked out his claim. He built a log cabin by an ever bubbling spring on the Buffalo River. He and his wife Sarah lived there during their remaining days. They were buried in the Adair family cemetery near their log cabin on the old home place. Gravestones mark their last resting place.
Their children are:
~ James Adair born 1818
~ Melenda Adair born 1827
~ John Adair Jr. born 1828
~ Barbara Adair born 1831
~ Isaac Adair born 1832
~ William Adair born 1835
~ Sarah Adair born 1840
~ Harris Adair born 1842
~ George W. Adair born 1844.
The Adair family cemetery may be seen by visiting the site of John Adair's old home place now in the Buffalo National River Park in Newton County, Arkansas. John Adair's gravestone is engraved with the epitaph "REST FOR THE WEARY." A circle surrounds a plow, mattock, shovel, hatchet, as well as a hand with the forefinger pointing up. Both he and his wife Sarah have comb graves which are covered with rectangular sandstone slabs leaning together to form a gable roof. Each slab is about six feet long and two feet wide. Triangle cut stones enclose each end. -Artie Adair.
