Longtime Anchorage resident Gene Damron, 70, died of heart failure May 4, 1999, at Alaska Regional Hospital. Visitation was at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St.. Services were held at First Baptist Church of Anchorage, 1100 W. 10th Ave., with the Rev. Marvin Owen and the Rev. Gene Medaris officiating. Burial followed at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Damron was born Aug. 28, 1928, in Comanche, Okla., to Stanley and Effie Damron. In 1950, he began his 36-year career with Halliburton in Bakersfield, Calif. He worked in California until the company transferred him to Alaska in 1966. A North Slope and Cook Inlet oil field pioneer, Mr. Damron worked as a service engineer, retiring in 1986. He was a Sunday school teacher and a deacon at First Baptist Church of Anchorage. According to his family, he enjoyed helping other people, being a grandpa, RV traveling and mall walking with friends. His family said, ''He was a wonderful Christian husband, father, grandfather and close friend to so many. Gene was always there for people with a helping hand and had a great sense of humor. His willing service for the Lord was a great example for us all.''
Mr. Damron is survived by his wife of 52 years, Josephine Damron of Anchorage; son and daughter-in-law, Floyd and Rhonda Damron of Anchorage; daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and James Parks of Florida, Alice and Johnny Womac of Peters Creek, and Loretta and Scott Railing of Anchorage; 14 grandchildren, three with spouses; two great-grandchildren; sister, Nell Heisch of Duncan, Okla.; twin brother, Wayne Damron of Riverside, Calif.; brother, Melvin Damron of Marlow, Okla.; and many other relatives and close friends. The family suggests any memorial donations be sent to First Baptist Church of Anchorage Elevator Fund, 1100 W. 10th Ave., Anchorage 99501, or Anchorage Gospel Rescue Mission, P.O.
