Nell Bates, 89, passed away on June 2, 2013 in Tyler, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, June 6, 2013 in Lunn's Colonial Chapel with Rev. John Dillard officiating. Burial will be in Crestview Cemetery under the direction of Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home.
Nell was born on August 18, 1923 to Stanley and Effie (Beck) Damron in Comanche, Oklahoma. Nell's first school years began at Comanche, Oklahoma. When she was in the 4th grade, her family moved to the Oak College Community, north of Comanche, where she finished grade school and grew up as a farm girl. Nell graduated from Comanche High School in 1941 and attended business college and Midwestern University in Wichita Falls.
Nell married Tracy O. Bates on March 22, 1942. To this union three children were born; Ned, Carl and Patricia. Tracy preceded her in death on March 24, 2012. Nell worked for many years as a Trust Officer at First-Wichita National Bank of Wichita Falls and retired in 1982 after 24 years of service. She was a long time member and Sunday School Teacher at City View Baptist Church.
Nell married Winston W. "Cass" Casstevens on June 11, 1983 and he preceded her in death in January 9, 1999. Nell moved her membership to First United Methodist Church in Wichita Falls where she assisted Prof. Edwards teaching an adults couple's class.
Nell was an active member of The Red Door Senior Citizen's Center, The Senior Citizen's Dance Club at the Wichita Falls Activity Center, The Criterion Club and the First-Wichita National Bank Retired Employees Association.
Nell married her friend from high school days, Vernon Heisch on March 17, 1999. He preceded her in death in September, 2009.
Nell was preceded in death by her parents; her former husbands; and by two brothers, Melvin S. "Tubby" Damron and Gene G. Damron. She is survived by three children, Ned T. Bates and wife Rachel of Wichita Falls, Texas, Carl L. Bates of Ben Wheeler, Texas and Patricia Majors and husband Joe of Big Sandy, Texas; a brother, Wayne W. Damron of Nixa, Missouri; eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchild.
