Born to Jeremiah 'Jerry' Jr. Young and Jane 'Jennie' Prouis Young in 1827 in Tazewell Tennessee.
Matthew fought in the Civil War in two differant units.
He was married to Minerva 'Nervie' Barnard and they had eight children, Ike, Martha Jane, Mary, Matilda, Pleasant Johnson 'Mint', Willian Henderson'Dr. Bob', John and George.
Matthew died of injuries he recieved in his last battle of the Civil War in Morristown,Tennessee. He is buried in the Lee Cemetery.

Note:
James Matt Young was a Corporal in the Calvery of the Confederate Army. There are two listings in the Tennessee Confederate roster for James Matthew Young. One is for a corporal, C Co. 2nd (Ashby's) Cavalry and the other is for a corporal in D Co, 5th (McCellan's) Calvary Battalion. These listings represent the same man. McDellan was a short-lived unit. It was reorganized in April of 1862. Company D became Company C of Ashby's regiment. His records therefore are filed in two places. He elisted on August 12, 1861 at Knoxville and died April 30, 1862 at Morristown, from wounds he recieved in the war. He was listed at 35 years old when he enlisted. He was married to Minerva Young and they appear on the 1860 census of Grainger County, Tennessee with five children. Manerva married Bowling Lee on February 22, 1877 in Claiborne County.

2nd Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry (Ashby's)

2nd (Ashby's) Cavalry Regiment was formed by consolidating the 4th and 5th Battalions of Tennessee Cavalry in May, 1862. The men were from the counties of Hamilton, Monroe, Knox, Union, Claiborne, Hawkins, Jefferson, Bledsoe, Bradley, Polk, Hancock, Blount, and Sullivan. It was assigned to Wharton's, Pegram's, J.S. Scott's, Davidson's, Humes', and H.M. Ashby's Brigade. The regiment participated in the conflicts at Cumberland Gap, Murfreesborough, and Chickamauga, then was involved in the Atlanta Campaign. Later it skirmished in Alabama, aided in the defense of Savannah, and took part in the campaign of the Carolinas. It lost 6 killed, 8 wounded, and 19 missing at Cumberland Gap, and reported 19 casualties at Chickamauga. Only a few surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. The field officers were Colonel Henry M. Ashby, Lieutenant Colonels Henry C. Gillespie and John H. Kuhn, and Majors Pharaoh A. Cobb and William M. Smith.

5th Battalion, Tennessee Cavalry (McClellan's)

5th Cavalry Battalion [also called 1st or 4th Battalion] was organized at Knoxville, Tennessee, in May, 1862, with six companies. The unit served under General Zollicoffer in the Department of East Tennessee and during September had 540 effectives. It skirmished in Kentucky, returned to Tennessee, and in May, 1862, merged into the 2nd (Ashby's) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. Lieutenant Colonel George R. McClellan and Major Thomas J. Campbell were in command.
