Argos, IN, 12/10/1913, Mrs. Henry Shaffer died at her home in Green Twp. about 9 miles southwest of here this morning. Her aged husband survives her. They were among the very oldest residents of that part of the county.

Susan Hendricks Shafer was born at South Whitley, IN, 8/12/1860. She was of a family of 12 children, 8 daughters & 4 sons. Four sisters yet survive; Mrs. Catherine Clapp of South Whitley, Mrs. Rachel Cramer of Washington [State], Mrs. Esther Bougher of Canada & Mrs. Alice Hittle of Marshall Co. IN. The 2 living brothers are Ulysses Grant Hendricks of NE and Winfield Scott Hendricks of Plymouth, IN. She was united in marriage to Andrew Jackson Stayton, 2/18/1876. To this union were born 4 daughters and one son, all of whom are living. Her first husband having departed, she was united in marriage again 9/16/1894 to Henry Shafer who survives her. She departed this life 12/10/1913, aged 53y3mo28ds. She was a devoted mother, a kind wife & a good neighbor & will be missed by all who knew her. Funeral services were held from Poplar Grove Friday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. A.L. Vermillion assisted by Rev. Thos. Whittaker. Interment in I.O.O.F. cemetery. [She was buried with 1st husband.]
